Facebook down

There were reports of a Facebook outage yesterday, May 31st. However, I seem to have encountered another outage this morning. Facebook was down for me this morning, June 1st, for at least a half hour.

Was it down for you?

What's happening, Facebook?

Perhaps it is just me. The Facebook header bar is behaving just like Twitter's header bar: they scroll down with the page.

The answer you submitted is not allowed

Facebook asks me to update my security information. I dutifully give them the requested information. Then they ask for an answer to a security question. I enter the name of the street I lived on when I was 8 years old.

Facebook tells me that answer is not allowed. I am not allowed to have lived where I lived when I was 8 years old?

So, I look for another security question to answer. The choices are few. Other than my driver's license number, which of these are questions only I can answer?

Might any of my Facebook friends -- many who knew me as a child -- know the answers to any of these?

Do I really want my security question to be something my mother can answer?

There is nothing secure about securing my account with answers to any of these security questions.

Are you sure you want to delete Facebook?

I only wanted to remove a Facebook widget from my iGoogle page. However, the possibility of completely deleting Facebook from the planet is intriguing. ;-)

You haven't texted us in 60 days.

I've been getting these for several days in spite of replying "on" to several of them.

I did reply "on" and was still shut off.

On further investigation, I see that the auto-capitalization feature of my phone's virtual keyboard had changed my "on" text message to "On".  I then text a manually forced "on", and get confirmation that the texts will continue.

Maybe it is just me, but I don't think automated keyword processing should be case-sensitive when users are entering the text on cell phones.

TEMPORARY SNAFU

I like the message explaining that even the best software has issues. The apology is nice. The not-so-serious and non-technical huge TEMPORARY SNAFU header may help manage user frustration.

However, isn't TEMPORARY SNAFU an oxymoron?

SNAFU is an acronym that came into usage nearly 70 years ago in the US Army: Situation Normal: All Fouled Up (with Fouled being a non-offensive substitution for something you can figure out.) If being fouled up is the normal state, is it really temporary?

So, I am a bit surprised to see Coca-Cola create an application with implied profanity and chaos in error messages.

Ads on top of features

To help ensure the advertisements on your Facebook application get clicked, put the ads on top of the functionality. Although, it could encourage your users to never use your application again.

Object cannot be liked

Tweeted by aalgar.

It appears Facebook doesn't allow users to like things that aren't accessible.

However, this message seems to be displayed if a user clicks the like link on something they have access to see that was posted by someone who is not their Facebook friend.
