Keyboard Failure

@mrgnou tweets: Best ad ever

There seems to be a pandemic of advertising signs with Keyboard Failure. Are these systems really not configured to work without a keyboard? Or are the people who install them trying to generate service calls every time there is a power outage?

Pop-under menus?

Not only does this newspaper web site page have no real content, but the menus to access other pages on the site are opening up underneath advertisements.  Perhaps newspapers could save money on their print editions if they just print the ads on top of the articles.

Ads on top of features

To help ensure the advertisements on your Facebook application get clicked, put the ads on top of the functionality. Although, it could encourage your users to never use your application again.

When advertising breaks functionality

TwitPic is an ad-supported service for sharing photos on Twitter. It appears that when the Alaska Airlines advertisement above is displayed, some of the TwitPic functionality disappears.

If you don't see the problem, or aren't familiar with TwitPic's functionality, take a look at the image below.

.

The thumbnails for browsing photos and some other functionality appears to be hidden below the advertisement instead of displayed below the advertisement.

As a user, I see a problem that interferes with my using the product. Although, I can refresh the web page and get a different advertisement and the hidden functionality reappears.

From the perspective of TwitPic or Alaska Airlines, might there be good reason to not fix this now? What if the advertisement was hidden by application links instead of the advertisement covering the links?
